Colorado Man Racing 1,100 Mile Iditarod On March 8, 2009 For Charities

Divide, Colorado, February 1, 2009: Kurt Reich has a dream to compete and finish in one of the last greatest races in the world. To put it into perspective, more people have made it to the top of Mt. Everest than have even finished the Iditarod.

In 1925, dog sled teams raced to deliver medicine along this route to help children dying of Diptheria in Nome, Alaska. Just for a little extra motivation, the donations that Kurt raises through Iditarod for Charities will be helping organizations that primarily help children. These organizations are: Memorial Hospital For Children, Arkansas Children's Hospital, Childrens Ark, Compassion International, and the Center for Single-Parent Family Ministry.

Heading out of Colorado on February 10, Kurt will be driving his dog sled team and equipment to compete in a 400 plus mile warm-up in Montana's "Race to the Sky". From there, he will be driving directly to the starting line town of Anchorage, Alaska for a brief rest. From there, it's a long dog sled race to Nome, Alaska just about 1,100 miles away with 22 check points in between. Kurt is only one of two competitors from Colorado with a total lineup of 70 teams.

Kurt has been dreaming of competing in the Iditarod for years and has put in all the planning a "rookie" can do, including his career on hold. There are so many things that can go wrong: Equipment breaks, the weather is horrific and forces you to stop at any given point, the dog team needs rest and the proper food and medical attention at all times.

He is racing his dog team at over 60 miles a day here in Divide, Colorado (near Colorado Springs). They are getting stronger each and every day and Kurt has a hard time getting them to slow and relax as they are already in the racing mindset. Kurt says, "They amaze me every day we get closer to the Iditarod. Their strength and determination is incredible."
